Northern Lights Tours Alaska - Aurora

Enjoy one of Blue Kennels Alaska Northern Lights Tours in Fairbanks. The Aurora Borealis are frequently seen during the months of September to Mid April. Our property is located at Mile 22 Chena Hot Springs Road, far enough from the town of Fairbanks, to not have any city lights illuminate the sky. We cater to small groups from 2 to 8 people. Families are welcome. ALL MEALS are included, as well as a dogride with a Team of Alaskan Huskies and a visit to the Chena Hot Springs with Ice Museum. Depending on the length of your stay, you have different activities included each afternoon.

You can choose between staying in a separate log cabin with 2 bedrooms and a  fully equipped Kitchen. There is power and oil heat, and also a wood stove for cozy evenings by the fireplace. Or you can stay in the main house in nicely appointed bedrooms with northern themes. One bedroom has a private bath, the other a shared bath.

On Day 1 we pick you up at the airport or downtown hotel and do a short city tour of Fairbanks, with a stop at the Alyeska Pipeline. As mushers we are happy to take you to the downtown log cabin Yukon Quest Office. The owner of Blue Kennels Sebastian Schnuelle is the 2009 Yukon Quest Champion. After moving into your room and a plentiful dinner, enjoy your first night of Northern Light viewing. Dinner included.

Day 2. As most northern light viewing is done between the hours of 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. the mornings during the tour are free for your leisure and to sleep in. After lunch on day 2 you get to experience the State Sport of Alaska: A DOG SLED TRIP. The 3 hour tour will take you on parts of the Yukon Quest Trail and you can choose between driving your own dog-team ( 3 or 4 dogs ), riding the tag sled, or being seated in the main custom made guide sled. A team of 12 to 14 dogs will be driven by a knowledgeable guide. You have plenty of time to take pictures and meet the dogs. In case there is no snow for sled yet, like in September, October and maybe early November, we take the team out with a wheeled training cart. Breakfast, lunch and Dinner.

Day 3. In the early afternoon of day 3 we take a 35 Mile drive to the Chena Hot Springs along the scenic Chena Hot Springs Road. Take a dip in their soothing waters of the Hot Springs and visit the Ice Museum. After returning to the Kennel, you can enjoy another night of northern lights viewing. From mid November on, once the trails have enough snow you can also book an optional snowmachine tour for $ 120 for 3 hrs . Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 4.  After breakfast on day 4, we drive you back to the Airport in Fairbanks or downtown hotel.

For the guests of the 4 night-5 day Tour. After lunch we go on another 3 hrs guided dog sled tour. If you are up for it, we can also do this run longer.  At any time during your stay, you are welcome to explore the boreal forest. There is always one of our sled dogs happy to accompany you on your hike. If you really like sled dogs, I am sure we can find a dog who likes to cuddle up with you on your couch or spend the night in your cabin or bedroom.

Here a few pictures of our home: Primarily we are a sled dog kennel. Our life centers around the dogs. If you like dogs, you are at the right place. We hope you take one of your favorites inside, as they do enjoy time the couch as much as you do. The main house has 2 separate bedrooms, one with a private bath. There are 2 showers in the main house.

The guest cabin has cold running water, power, oil heat  and also a wood stove. Plumbing is basic in the Cabin and there is an outhouse next to it. Much easier to deal with in cold winters, than trying to keep waterlines from freezing up.  In general our place is best for people who enjoy clean, basic accommodations.  Yes there is a TV in the cabin, and also in the living room in the main house. I think we have turned it on once...  We do have wifi internet and there is cell phone coverage. But we are not a high end lodge and do not want to be one. Meals are taken jointly in the  main house.
